The East London Mosque Phase 2

In mid 2008 we were once again approached by the East London Mosque Trust to look at a proposal for a significant new extension
to the mosque. The new proposal includes an extension to the existing prayer hall to increase capacity for Friday prayer in the dedicated prayer spaces. It also includes a substantial new wing of dedicated ladies facilities and including a seperate entrance, new prayer hall, multipurpose hall, a ladies gym and community classrooms. There is also a new outreach centre with a public gallery and a relocated and enlarged space for the on site funeral directors. New accommodation totals some 5,500sqm of space.

A further aspiration of the building is to provide 100% accessibility across the entore complex. This is acheived by a new linking concourse that sits at the hub of the existing mosque, the London Muslim Centre and the phase 2 building.

On the Whitechapel Road the local landmark of the existing mosque dome is enhanced with a new zig-zag mosaic backdrop and lighting scheme.

The building started on site in late 2009 and is scheduled for completion by mid November 2010 in time to celebrate the Mosques Centenary.
