The scheme opposite the International Passenger Station was conceived to act as a catalyst for regeneration of the wider area. It consists of 120 residential, including 8 live/work duplex units, 4000m2 of office space and a 100-bed hotel. The EcoHomes scheme was adopted as a method of ensuring high environmental standards - the project was designed to achieve an excellent rating.
Ashford South MasterplanThe Ashford South Masterplan project grew out of the Victoria Road mixed-use scheme as a way of demonstrating how it could act as a generator for future growth of the town.
The Ashford’s Future Study run by the local authority looks to create a vision for the town as part of its plan for doubling in size as one of the Government’s areas of regional growth. The Ashford South Masterplan examines the area around the International Passenger Station giving it an urban context.
A new landmark hotel terminates the axis of the main route into the town creating a southern gateway. The main road which at present is a high speed dual carriageway is transformed into a tree-lined boulevard with street frontages, as part of a new urban quarter.
The river corridors running through the area offer a green counterpoint and are used to knit together a network of pedestrian and cycle routes that run through the mixed-use scheme.
We were commissioned by Ashford Borough Council to undertake this study as part of a wider review of the town’s development to demonstrate how the Victoria Road proposals could form part of a larger integrated masterplan for expansion of the town’s centre south of the main east-west railway line.
